Key West Gingerbread House For The Holiday

Although it’s not the typical gingerbread house you imagine around the holiday season, Key West is home to some of the most beautiful gingerbread you will ever see. One of the most distinctive characteristics of a Key West house is its gingerbread designs. This is the wooden millwork encircling the wide porches of many homes.

Christopher Cox states in A Key West Companion, “It was an unwritten rule that each Key West family had its own gingerbread design, selected either by fancy or to suggest the nature of the family business and it was not to be copied. One discovers in the gingerbread around the island designs such as sailing ships, anchors, pies, and, in one house where bootlegged liquor was sold, whiskey bottles.”

This Key West Gingerbread House was once home to one of the last locals to make this intricate woodwork seen adorning so many homes around town. Here you can see a gingerbread man wrapping around the entire eve of this home.
